technology

I came across this photo today (on Neatorama) of an IBM350 memory storage unit being loaded onto a plane in 1956:

Here's another view. It was called the 350 because it used 350 discs to store - get ready - 5MB worth of data.

In comparison, here's a man holding two Samsung memory chips, created in 2009, which hold 32GB each. That's a total of 65,536 megabytes, or more than 13,000 times the storage capacity of the IBM350.

Do you think those guys on the plane had any idea what the future would hold?

navel lint

An Australian man named Graham Baker collected and stored his bellybutton lint (shown above) for 25 years, which earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. I'm fascinated by the color changes from the first jar to the last. According to a chemist from Vienna University, who spent 3 years analyzing his own navel lint, it is made up of cotton from clothing, dust, skin flecks, sweat and fat(?).

To all my party people!

Hangover Cure: Bacon Sandwich

"Bread is high in carbohydrates and bacon is full of protein, which breaks down into amino acids. Your body needs these amino acids, so eating them will make you feel good."

Ms Roberts told The Mirror: "Bingeing on alcohol depletes neurotransmitters too, but bacon contains a high level of aminos which tops these up, giving you a clearer head."

Researchers also found a complex chemical interaction in the cooking of bacon produces the winning combination of taste and smell which is almost irresistible.

The reaction between amino acids in the bacon and reducing sugars in the fat is what provides the sandwich with its appeal.

I hope you don't need it, but incase you do...you can read more about it at the Telegraph.
